At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday, Apple () said it would add Wi-Fi calling to the iPhone when it — iOS 8 — later this year.
Now, T-Mobile (
) says that it will support Wi-Fi calling from iPhones on its network. The nation’s fourth largest carrier said that “With the upcoming update, more than 90 percent of all T-Mobile smartphones will feature Wi-Fi Calling.” A T-Mobile executive observed that T-Mobile was “the very first U.S. wireless provider to enable Wi-Fi Calling nationwide on our Android-powered and Windows smartphones” in a post on its corporate blog, PCMagazine notes.
Wi-Fi calling — already available on a number of smartphones on Sprint () and T-Mobile — permits users to make telephone calls even if they cannot access their carriers voice network.
Apple will officially launch iOS 8 in the fall along with its next-generation iPhone 6. A beta version of iOS 8 is already available to Apple developers.
TMUS stock fell almost 2% in Tuesday morning trading, while AAPL shares climbed modestly.
