A new streaming video service carrying the Redbox name is close to launch.
Redbox Instant — a partnership between Verizon (NYSE:) and Coinstar (NASDAQ:) — aims to compete directly with Netflix (NASDAQ:). While the companies are being very quiet about the development of Redbox Instant, some details have leaked out, .
The service initially will be available on the web, Google (NASDAQ:
) Android and Apple (NASDAQ:) iOS devices, Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:) Xbox, and select television and Blu-ray systems. At the start, the number of videos available for streaming will be understandably smaller than Netflix’s current catalog.
Here are a few more things about the service:
- Launch date is tentatively Dec. 17.
- Cost for the service: $6 per month.
- An extra $2 per month gets subscribers four Redbox rental credits per month.
- Rentals for newer titles will start at 99 cents.
